Friday, April 25, 2008
An announcement from President Cornacchia:
It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Marylou Yam as Vice President for Academic Affairs effective June 1, 2008.
Dr. Yam joined Saint Peter's College in 1989 as an instructor in the Nursing Department. In 1997, she became Director of the Master of Science in Nursing program and in 2000, the Chairperson of the Nursing Department. A year later, she was named Associate Dean of Nursing and was promoted to full professor in 2004. In 2006, she was appointed Academic Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Business Administration.
Dr. Yam has been an extraordinary leader who has been at the forefront of program development. She developed the MSN Program at Saint Peter's College (1997), spearheaded the development of the RN to BSN Bridge Program and the BSN to MSN Program Option (2002), and more recently, successfully guided the College's Generic BSN program application through the state regulatory process. Dr. Yam led her Department through two successful national accreditation reviews. She has been a tireless advocate of high academic standards, exemplifying those standards in her own courses and ensuring the highest standards in the Nursing Program. A strong advocate of assessment, she co-chaired the College's Assessment Committee. Widely published, she models the highest professional standards. As Academic Dean, she worked with colleagues on several program development projects, faculty development initiatives, creation of a common reading program and sophomore success program, enhancements to the academic advisement system, to name just a few of her accomplishments.
Dr. Yam earned her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing in 1981 from Mercy College, her M.A. and Ed. M. degrees in Nursing Education from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 1993, she earned her Ph.D. from Adelphi University. In 2002, she was awarded a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
In her application for the Vice President's position, Dr. Yam stated: “I am deeply committed to the mission of the College. It would be an honor for me to serve Saint Peter's College in the role of Vice President for Academic Affairs. I would eagerly work with faculty and administration to create a shared vision; and, to implement strategies necessary for the provision of quality academic programs and services for all of our student populations.” I have absolute confidence in Dr. Yam's leadership and look forward to working with her to build and strengthen the College and to deepen our commitment to high academic standards. I am gratified that the search committee and the faculty who responded to the evaluation surveys found Dr. Yam to be well qualified for the position.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Marylou Yam on her appointment and in wishing her well as she begins this new phase of her already very successful academic career.
I also wish to thank the search committee, who did an excellent and thorough job: Dr. Fred Bonato (chair), Dr. Virginia Bender, Dr. Joan Connell, Dr. Jerome Gillen, Dr. Maryellen Hamilton, Dr. David Surrey and Anna de la Paz (student).
