Guard Lindsay Gonzalez is about to become the first Puerto Rican woman to play professional basketball in Europe after signing for Swedish team Norrkoping. Gonzalez, who led Leonas de Ponce to into the Puerto Rican league finals in 2004, expects to be on court next weekend. "I should travel to Sweden on Wednesday, arrive there on Thursday and begin playing on Sunday," she told Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia. "I'm a bit nervous because everything happened very fast, but I'm confident in doing my job well there. The team is in the middle of the season and they need a guard until the end of it. This is the chance I have always wanted." Norrkoping are sixth in the league with an 8-5 record. They contacted Gonzalez through Bob Leckie, who coached the men's team of St Peter's College, in New Jersey, where Gonzalez played. "This is a big step," Gonzalez said. "I hope this will also open the door to other Puerto Rican girls to play in Europe."
